Survivors Teaching Students

Organization: Ovarian Cancer National Alliance Programme

Country: USA; Canada; UK

Forum: Patient engagement

Through the Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women’s Lives® program, the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance educates health care professionals and raises public awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. The goal of the program is to increase the number of health care providers who recognize the symptoms of and risk factors for ovarian cancer so that the disease is detected earlier, when treatment is more effective.

As part of the program, ovarian cancer survivors tell their unique stories, along with facts about the disease, to healthcare students. The students are encouraged to interact with and learn from patients. The program engages directly with patients, inviting them to share their experiences and knowledge in order to improve awareness of ovarian cancer among future healthcare professionals and support early diagnosis.

Survivors Teaching Students is available in 88 medical schools, 55 nursing schools, 5 Nurse Practitioner schools, 16 Physician Assistant schools, and 7 allied health programs across the USA, Virgin Islands, UK and Canada. In 2012, the program educated 9,446 students, a 52% increase over the previous year.
