Patient Solidarity Day

Organization: International Alliance of Patients Organizations

Country: Africa

Forum: Patient engagement

The Patient Solidarity Day was created by patient advocates in Kenya and Uganda in 2011 and by 2013 had spread to include ten Africa countries (Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). The rationale behind the event is that patient-centered healthcare is the most effective way to address the challenges facing the health system in Africa. Increasingly patient-centered healthcare will deliver services that will meet the real needs of patients and recognize them as equal partners in their healthcare.

Patient-centered care is based on the following 5 principles:

  1. Respect
  2. Choice and empowerment
  3. Patient involvement in health policy
  4. Access and support
  5. Information

The Day is coordinated by the International Alliance of Patient’s Organizations (IAPO) and brings together patient organizations across diseases (including cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell, psoriasis and mental health) with medical professionals, healthcare providers, policymakers, regulators, and community leaders to consider how patient-centred healthcare can improve health outcomes.

The 2014 Patient Solidarity Day will take place on 6 December and will provide another opportunity for patient organizations to come together with different stakeholders and call on health ministers to prioritize patient-centered care.
